We had another exciting week in grade 2! Second graders got to listen to the visiting author and illustrator Bryn Barnard. He shared some ideas about gathering information for his nonfiction books and illustrations and told the students about some interesting sea creatures!

Language Arts
Language Arts
Our readers did some hard reading work this week taking their comprehension skills to the next level. Students learned how authors use literary language to help the reader picture things in their minds, describe characters and help give them a better understanding of what is happening. We noticed similes, alliteration sound words and some playful idioms that made students stop and question and have a few giggles.
Our lab report procedural writing continues with a few more science experiment this week. Students were testing ways to make liquids turn into gases with different heat sources. This week they wrote their lab reports independently applying the things they have learned as Science writers: detailed steps, using their senses to record observations and sharing their findings in their conclusions.
Math
This week we were math detectives looking for clues in story problems. Students learned to set up an equation with the known information and a symbol for the unknown. They then used strategies such as number lines, drawing base ten blocks, manipulatives or other equations to show their thinking and write the answer with the units. We will keep learning about different kinds of story problems and share strategies in solving them. Please continue to help your child with reviewing math facts and telling time. This week students also looked at adding two digit numbers bigger than 20 without regrouping. This is an ongoing practice that will be applied to story problems.
Science
Students tried different ways to change matter from liquids to gases week. Some ways that the students explored were putting it on a bunsen burner, hot plate, hair dryer and in the microwave. They timed how much water would evaporate from a glass beaker and compared their findings. We also did a demonstration experiment changing a liquid back into a solid by putting it in the freezer and checking how long it would take to be frozen solid.
