15 - 23 February

Here's an update for the week and a half. Our Chinese New Year celebration was fabulous! Thank you in
advance to parents who volunteered for mini academy tomorrow Tuesday. Here's what we have done:
Language Arts
Students continued to focus on comparing and contrasting information that is similar and different
across books on a similar topic. They got to practice this with their reading buddies on Friday. Then
students focussed on retelling non-fiction. We looked at the difference between retelling fiction and
non-fiction and used the structure of retelling non-fiction to retell information in the book that they were
reading. Our writers conferred with their writing partner and cleared up confusions that might occur
when one is not clear in writing. The reading partner provided feedback using the PQP (praise, question and polish) protocol. They then reflected on the goal that they set for the second book and ensured that they have the evidence of their goal in the second book.

Math Workshop
We started our unit 4 by taking a closer look at the vocabulary for this unit. Students then refreshed their
memories on different strategies that they can use for multi digit additions such as composing,
decomposing, base 10, number line, doubles and making ten,
Science
Students made a book on book creator on how to wash your hands. Then we pretended to brush our
teeth for 2 minutes to gauge exactly how long 2 minutes are. We were curious on whether soap and water
are better to clean our hands with or the hand sanitiser is better. We conducted an experiment on that
and found out that there were less mould on the bread that we touched with hands cleaned by the
sanitiser than by soap and water.
